Neighborhood: Logan CircleI have been to Logan for things like shower liners and other little household neccesities...I love it there, the people are always cool and helpful.

Yes, it's convenient to have a store like this in a neighborhood that typically would not have it. Yes, it is amazing that they manage to have all types of crazy variety items in such a tiny store. But I'm not buying the hype.
Maybe I was there at an off-time (20 minutes before closing) but that's no reason to completely ignore a customer. I was looking for a somewhat random item and had never been there before. I must've walked around for at least ten minutes and not a single person offered to help me find anything . When I did ask for help finding this one item, the guy behind the counter just mumbled something about the second floor. Like telling me which half of the store to go to helps me find an item they only carried three of.
No, the service didn't totally ruin my experience, and yes, I will more than likely be back there at some point. But service like that ruined any chance of this place having a top rating.

I'm most likely violating all sorts of ethics by writing this review, but what the heck.
I worked at Logan Hardware for a while, and I have to say I absolutely love this place. I'm attempting to be as objective as possible in this review, so here goes.
Logan is a great place to work, and before I worked there I loved to shop there. I realized all along that some items were more expensive at Logan than at Home Depot or Lowe's. However, shopping at Home Depot is just not an option. It's too far away, and it's just a pain in the butt.
Logan Hardware has pretty much everything you would need for your basic home improvement. Paint, tools, housewares, fasteners, and a small selection of lumber. If you're trying to do your own arts & crafts furniture project, you may need to turn to a real lumberyard... you'll only find some pine and plywood here. But as far as everything else goes, you'll have good choices and a staff that is always willing to help you out.
The great thing about Logan, and it's sister stores (Glover Park, Tenleytown and Fifth Street) is the customer service. Having worked at these stores, I can tell you just how much customer service is emphasized. Sales associates and managers are never trained on how to "upsell" people. Instead, they are trained on how the store's products work, and how to help customers identify what they need. The management would much rather have a sales associate tell a customer "well this isn't really what you need" than try to get them to buy $75 worth of stuff they will end up regretting.
In the end, at Logan, it's all about having the customer leave the store happy, even if they don't buy anything. And that's what's great, and why I will continue to shop at Logan as long as I live in D.C., even if I no longer work there.

I've been to Logan Hardware for several things. Every time I've been, the staff has been very friendly and helpful. They have just about everything an apartment dweller would need from a hardware store.
The prices are slightly more than one would pay at Home Depot, but the convenient location and fantastic service makes the price well worth it to me.

I have a funny feeling that I massively overpay in this place--it is, after all, located right next to Whole Foods.
But I really don't care. I'm a sucker for "you can find anything here" hardware stores, and Logan is one of those places. It's not that huge of a place, but I always have a feeling that they could help you fix absolutely anything. Need a part to fix your 8-track player? They'll smile at you, radio the guy upstairs, and then give you directions to the obscure 2nd-floor shelf loaded with discontinued stereo parts.
I'm making that up. They probably can't really help you fix your 8-track player, but they'll at least be nice to you while they use their walkie-talkies and sincerely try to help. I have the mechanical aptitude of a turnip, so I'm grateful for their assistance and pleasantness, even if it means paying Whole Hardware-type prices.

These guys are great! knowledgable, nice, know the meaing of customer service, and friendly!
go there for sure!
If there's a bad thing about this place, I haven't seen it. Friendly, joking staff who will tell you when something you want to buy sucks and then give you a better alternative. Things are relatively priced, and the set up is fine. If every neighborhood had a Logan's, well, then every neighborhood would have an awesome hardware store.

I love this place. It made moving to the area so much easier. The staff are knowledgable and friendly. Anyone who is willing to spend 20 minutes trying to find the right faucet connector so that I can filter my DC water (blegh) is my hero.

Under their tutelage, I learned to replace a light switch. The surge of pride was well worth the markup!

This is the best hardware store I have ever encountered. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and they will go out of their way to make sure your needs are met.

Great addition to a neighborhood that has few conveniences that doesn't involve food and beverages. For being it's size, LH carries an array of goods for the home, not just nails and the usual hardware stuff. They sell kitchen goods, mirrors and makes keys! The staff here is usually very helpful, and they have a good return policy just in case you buy the wrong kind of light bulb!

Unless I need 40 sheets of 4x8 OSB, I have far better luck here than with home depot. People here actually know what they're doing. Their stock is tailored to the neighborhood. I can make it one of my errands, rather than having to plan an expedition out to upper northeast.
A few years ago my building had an infestation of bedbugs, part of a rash of infestation in the city at that time. Home depot offered roach spray, Logan Hardware offered a CHOICE of bedbug sprays.
I often build hairbrain contraptions, and Logan hardware always assists me finding just the right doodad to make it work. If they don't have it, they'll order it. But all in all, I am constantly surprised how much stuff they manage to have in such a small store. Their plants are a little lame, but Whole Foods and Garden District are close enough to overlook that.
Please shop here, you'll be glad you did. Their value, people, and selection are top notch. Big box stores are hurting our mom and pop shops and neighborhoods, and we're losing great customer service and value for the false economy that Home Depot and Walmart provide.

Definitely agree that the prices are steep, but the convenience, selection (I found things I didn't even know I needed/existed) and the helpful staff more than make up for it.

This place rocks with a capital R.O.C.K.S.
The staff is super friendly and they radio each other on the top or bottom floors in order to expedite their service to you. "Charlie, we've got a crazy one heading upstairs for an L bracket." "Roger that". Well, not really like that, and I don't know if anyone named Charlie even works here, but its fun to think so. They have an extensive selection of everything. Last time I was there I walked out with three types of glue - wood glue, elmer's glue, and super strength super glue (that ended up not working for me - my fault!).
Everyone is happy and helpful! Hmm, actually, the girl who was working on Labor Day didn't seem to be too happy, but can you blame her?
Yeah, and with most of my hardware store reviews, I must comment on the good looks of the gentleman staff, 5 stars right there. tee hee.
Splendid!

Great neighborhood store with a helpful and friendly staff and, as far I could see, very reasonable prices.
The staff are always friendly and eager to help. They don't always have every answer for me, but they try a lot harder than at Home Depot. And you'd be surprised that this little store, which doesn't even feel cramped, carries so much. I sure enjoy having them in the neighborhood, so I don't have to plan my day around a trip to a mega-store.

They are hand's down one of the best places I've been to in DC for customer service and friendliness. I now live closer to Frager's, but still will stop in on my way home sometimes. I wish they had a little more room, but they almost always have what I need, and they've been great about any returns I've made, such as the water spray nozzle that was left out all winter and no longer worked! Um, ya, that was probably not a good idea, but they replaced it!
Tip: if you combine your trip to Whole Foods next door, you can park in the Whole Foods garage - you just have to get a validation from the cashier at Whole Foods.

i needed to switch my plates from va to dc and couldnt get the bolts off. i decided to take a trip to logan hardware and get some wd-40 to loosen those suckers. when i told the sales guy what i was looking for he grabbed a bottle from the back and a pair of pliers and took off my license plates for me, no charge for the oil. what a guy! i also come here for random things like pots for plants and to get extra keys made. 5 stars for the customer service!

I love the feeling of a local neighborhood store, and Logan's Hardware is hard to beat. From the outside you think you're going to go back in time to some hardware store from the 40's (in a good way), but then you go in and they have like everything that you would need and beyond. Whether you want to clean or build something, they have it all! And the staff is sooo helpful and friendly. I never feel dumb for asking a question, and they go out of their way to make sure I know how to use what I'm buying.
And yea, the street it's on is awesome. You can get a whole week's worth of errands done in under an hour!

Stores like Logan Hardware prove there will always be a place for customer-service oriented neighborhood hardware stores, even as big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes spread like Starbucks. Within five seconds of walking through their door, someone will ask you if you need help finding anything. If it's an item on the second floor, they direct you upstairs and radio one of the upstairs reps to tell them what you are looking for. It's a refreshing change from the hours that can be spent wandering the cavernous expanses of HD looking for a sales person.
They also have a huge selection of cleaning supplies and basic housewares, so check here first before going to Bed Bath and Beyond.

I have to hand it to them. They have good service. Of course prices are better at the national chains, but you can't find anything at Home Depot etc.

This place is great. I like the people who work there. They are super helpful. I like the stuff they have. I like that it's close because I'm lazy.
If you need keys made I recommend the pink ones with flowers on them.

Its a charming place. I however have discovered that the markup on some items is over 50 percent of Home Depot prices. I'm all about supporting small businesses, but thats a hefty price to pay.

Although I often shop at Home Depot (cheaper) or Adams Morgan Hardware (closer to me), I think Logan Hardware is the friendliest, most helpful, and pleasant purveyor of hardware in the District. For a first time home-owner who's more handicapped than handy when it comes to home improvement, I was grateful for the useful guidance from Logan Hardware's knowledgeable staff. The store's inventory is definitely geared towards the urban homeowner and the prices aren't awful considering the convenience and quality of service.
Meanwhile, who knew that fixing a leaky faucet could be so damn satisfying?

there are hardware stores like true value on 17th, where you walk through the valley of the shadow of millions of tiny widgets. there's the true value on P at dupont circle, handy for bike stuff. but sweet logan hardware: full of light, well-organized, with a friendly knowledgeable staff. first time i went there, i asked a question on the first floor, climbed to the third, and they had *radioed* my question upstairs -- the person was waiting to show me exactly what i needed. almost scarily efficient.
i did have one person balk at making keys a half-hour before closing, but i don't entirely blame them -- granted, its a hardware store, but would you want to hear that noise 24-7? sheesh.
if they don't have something, they're usually happy to call around. take a break from home despot and give it a whirl.
5 star earner: they rent tools! drill/power washer/carpet cleaner etc. no need to buy something you'll only use once.
